Layering a Cica Ampoule and Sunscreen for Sensitive, Spot-Prone Skin
How to use the ROUND LAB Pine Calming Cica Ampoule and AHC Masters Aqua Rich Sun Cream together in a simple, calming AM routine.
If your skin is prone to irritation and breakouts, pairing a fragrance-free cica ampoule with a barrier-supporting sunscreen is one of the more practical moves in Korean skincare. The ROUND LAB Pine Calming Cica Ampoule goes on after toning, absorbs fast, and sets up a clean base for the AHC Masters Aqua Rich Sun Cream to finish the routine with SPF50+/PA++++ protection.
Who This Routine Is For
This pairing is built for skin that is sensitive, reactive, or dealing with active breakouts and post-blemish marks at the same time. If you find most serums either sting, pill under sunscreen, or leave a residue that makes SPF application uneven, this combination is worth trying. Both products are fragrance-free or close to it, fast-absorbing, and formulated with barrier-supportive ingredients rather than aggressive actives.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, recently treated or managing multiple allergies, check each brand's current guidance and ask your doctor before use. A patch test before first use is also worth doing with either product.
One thing to know upfront: the Pine Calming Cica Ampoule contains Capryloyl Salicylic Acid, a gentler lipid-soluble form of BHA. It is not a dedicated exfoliant in the way a toner with 2% salicylic acid would be, but it is worth factoring in if you are already using other exfoliating actives in your routine. More on that in the cautions section.
What Each Product Does
According to the brand, the ROUND LAB Pine Calming Cica Ampoule is built around an 80.4% concentration of Pine Cica Activer — a blend of pine leaf extract and five centella asiatica-derived ingredients. Centella asiatica has a long track record in Korean skincare for calming redness and supporting the skin barrier, and pine leaf extract adds an additional soothing angle. The formula also includes multi-weight hyaluronic acid for layered hydration, meaning it works at the surface and slightly beneath it. The texture is a water-gel that absorbs quickly without leaving any stickiness, which matters a lot when sunscreen is coming next.
The AHC Masters Aqua Rich Sun Cream is a chemical-filter sunscreen rated SPF50+/PA++++, offering broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Beyond UV filters, it carries niacinamide, ceramide NP, and phytosphingosine — ingredients that support the barrier and help with tone evenness over time. The finish is described as natural, not matte, not dewy, which makes it comfortable under makeup or on its own. It is designed as the final step of the morning routine.
How to Apply Them, in Order
The sequence here is straightforward: ampoule first, sunscreen last. Both absorb relatively fast, but you still want to give the ampoule a moment to settle before layering SPF over it.
Step 1 — Ampoule. After cleansing and toning, dispense one to two drops of the Pine Calming Cica Ampoule onto your fingertips and press it gently into the skin. Do not rub — the tapping motion helps it absorb without dragging. Wait about 60 seconds, or until the skin no longer feels tacky.
Step 2 — Sunscreen. Apply the AHC Masters Aqua Rich Sun Cream as the final step. Spread an appropriate amount evenly across the face and neck — a common reference is about a quarter teaspoon for the face, though the amount depends on your face size and how much coverage you need. The cream spreads easily over the gel base left by the ampoule without balling up or pilling, provided the first layer is fully absorbed.
