HERA: The Seoul-Born Korean Skincare Brand for Makeup Lovers
A prestige K-beauty brand founded in 1995 that blends skincare ingredients into high-performance color cosmetics.
HERA is a Seoul-born Korean skincare and makeup brand launched by Amorepacific in 1995. It is known for fusing skincare actives into base makeup, most famously through the Black Cushion franchise. Kayty features the Reflection Skin Glow Foundation — a liquid foundation with a dewy finish, built on what the brand describes as a 78% skincare formula.
Who HERA Is For
If you have ever found yourself wanting your foundation to do double duty — cover and care, in roughly equal measure — HERA is probably already on your radar. Since its launch in 1995, HERA has described itself as a luxury beauty brand representing Seoul, aiming to define the new beauty of each era. The brand targets people who move through a city every day and want base makeup that looks deliberate without feeling heavy. Think of it as a HERA Korean skincare brand story and a makeup story running simultaneously, never pulling apart.
HERA is not a skincare-only label, and it is not a pure color cosmetics house either. It sits in the gap between the two, building formulas that are as comfortable to wear as a serum and as polished as anything you'd find at a department store counter.
Where HERA Comes From
HERA launched in January 1995 under the Amorepacific Group, one of Asia's largest beauty conglomerates. Amorepacific describes itself as the largest cosmetics company in South Korea and one of the ten largest in the world. HERA was positioned from the start as Amorepacific's prestige color brand — one rung above everyday and explicitly tied to the idea of Seoul as a reference point for beauty.
The brand built its identity around the keywords "Here (right here in Seoul), Now (at this moment), Myself (revealing who I truly am)" — a philosophy that still shapes the way it communicates today. The "Seoulista" became HERA's muse: a figure representing the exceptional beauty of modern Korean women who are fashionable, elegant, confident and passionate. It describes the kind of person HERA designs for: someone who curates, who edits, who wants their look to feel like a considered choice.
What HERA Is Known For
HERA is best known for its cushion foundations. The UV Mist Cushion, launched in 2012 as HERA's first cushion, was a multi-sun-base product applied easily and lightly, aligning with the cushion format's origins. It integrated the trend of mist-sprayed dewy skin into a cushion format; according to Amorepacific, it hit 10 billion KRW in sales in just 50 days.
The real turning point came five years later. According to Amorepacific, the Black Cushion, first launched in 2017, held the number-one cushion position for seven consecutive years and surpassed cumulative sales of 10 million units as a single makeup item in early 2024. Each generation of the Black Cushion has raised the bar for what consumers expect from a cushion foundation: more coverage, better wear, and a finish that does not migrate.
Beyond base makeup, HERA has long been embedded in Korean fashion culture. In 2015, HERA became the title sponsor of Seoul Fashion Week, after which some editions were billed as HERA Seoul Fashion Week. That connection to the runway has shaped how the brand approaches color — always with an eye on what is happening in Seoul's creative districts, not just what is selling globally.
