ATOPALM: The Korean Skincare Brand Built on Barrier Science
A South Korean derma-cosmetics brand founded in 2000, built around its proprietary MLE barrier technology for sensitive and reactive skin.
ATOPALM is a Korean skincare brand launched in 2000 by NeoPharm, a science-focused company based in South Korea. According to the brand, its formulas center on its patented MLE (Multi-Lamellar Emulsion) technology, which it says arranges ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids to mimic the structure of a healthy skin barrier. The range spans babies through adults and includes a maternity line.
Who This Brand Is For
If your skin sits anywhere on the sensitive spectrum — reactive to fragrance, prone to dryness or prone to flare-ups — ATOPALM is a brand worth knowing. ATOPALM describes itself as a sensitive skin specialist, with products formulated for compromised skin barriers and very dry skin. The range spans babies through adults, and its maternity line addresses the specific way pregnancy reshapes the skin. As a Korean skincare brand, ATOPALM sits in the derma-cosmetics category: science-led, minimal in irritants, and focused on the skin barrier as the central problem to solve.
Where the Brand Came From
The name says a great deal: "ATO" refers to sensitive skin, and "PALM" to the caring touch of a hand. According to the brand, ATOPALM began with a father's concern for his child's sensitive skin. Dr. Park Byeong-deok, who was in charge of novel materials development at the Aekyung Central Research Center, was concerned about his son's sensitive skin and spent years researching the MLE formula — a technology that recreates ceramide and the structure of healthy skin lipids as closely as possible.
ATOPALM launched in December 2000 as NeoPharm's sensitive-skin brand. Since its founding, NeoPharm has researched and developed solutions for sensitive skin based on its proprietary MLE skin-barrier technology. According to NeoPharm, ATOPALM presented clinical results at the World Congress of Dermatology in France in 2002, and an MLE structure study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2003.
The Science Behind MLE Technology
ATOPALM's approach is structural. MLE — Multi-Lamellar Emulsion — is NeoPharm's proprietary skin-barrier technology, which the company says forms a multi-lamellar structure similar to that found in healthy skin, combining ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids to help moisturize the skin and reduce moisture loss.
The brand describes the result as fast-absorbing and non-sticky, helping retain moisture and keep sensitive skin feeling comfortable. According to NeoPharm, MLE also received Korea's first MFDS functional cosmetic approval in the skin-barrier category. NeoPharm now exports its products to over 34 countries on a B2B basis.
A Maternity Line Rooted in the Same Barrier Logic
Pregnancy changes skin in ways that are hard to predict. Skin stretches, dries out, loses elasticity, and can become reactive to products it once tolerated. ATOPALM's maternity line approaches these changes the same way it approaches every sensitive-skin concern: by working with the skin barrier rather than around it.
The product featured on Kayty from this line is the ATOPALM Maternity Care Massage Oil, a lightweight body oil the brand designed for dryness and loss of elasticity around pregnancy.
The oil is formulated to help relieve the dryness and itching that happens during and after pregnancy, and uses MLE and ceramide to help support the skin's moisture barrier, while squalane helps soften dry skin and leave it feeling smooth. Three vegetable oils — Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Rapeseed Oil, and Macadamia Seed Oil — help skin feel supple and smooth. Camu Camu Fruit extract is high in Vitamin C, and Rapeseed Oil is rich in Vitamins A and C.
